About this generator
Horror fiction is about dread. Not shock, not gore, not jump scares — dread. The feeling that something is wrong before you can articulate what. The best horror stories start in the ordinary and let the wrongness seep in gradually until the reader realizes the ground has shifted beneath them and there is no going back.
The ordinary gone wrong
Effective horror premises begin with something familiar. A house, a routine, a relationship, a town — something the reader recognizes. Then one element changes. The change is small at first. A sound that should not be there. A pattern that breaks. A memory that does not match. The generator produces premises built on this principle: ordinary situations with one element that is subtly, persistently wrong.
"Every night a town loses one minute of time, and only one woman remembers what filled it" is a horror premise that works because the ordinary thing (time passing) is behaving impossibly, and the horror is in what fills the gap. The generator aims for this kind of conceptual horror rather than splatter.
Escalation in horror
Horror escalation is different from thriller escalation. In a thriller, the situation gets physically worse. In horror, the situation gets existentially worse — the protagonist understands more about what is happening, and each new piece of understanding makes things worse rather than better. The generator structures horror concepts with this kind of deepening revelation.
If you want body horror, cosmic horror, psychological horror, or folk horror specifically, include that in the brief. Each subgenre has a different escalation logic. Cosmic horror makes the protagonist smaller as the story progresses. Psychological horror makes the protagonist doubt their own perception. Folk horror roots the threat in place and tradition. The output shifts based on which register you invoke.
What horror shares with literary fiction
The strongest horror fiction also works as literary fiction. The horror serves as a metaphor for something real — grief, isolation, loss of control, generational trauma. When the supernatural element maps onto a human experience, the story resonates beyond the scare. The generator tends toward this kind of layered horror when the brief includes emotional subtext alongside the scary situation.
